How to Sell Phone Wallpapers Online
Everyone with a phone wants a good wallpaper. Zedge, the wallpaper and ringtone app, reports 35M+ monthly active users and 436M+ downloads last year across all its content types (its own figures, from the Zedge creator page, read on October 7, 2026). If you want to sell phone wallpapers, that audience is your market.
There are three monetization paths:
Zedge (ads or paid downloads): You upload wallpapers and pick a model for each one. Free earns nothing. Ad-Gated means a user watches a short ad to download, and you earn from each view. Paid means users pay with Zedge credits, and you keep 70%. Signing up and uploading costs nothing. Traffic is large and the pay per download is small, so you need volume. It is the cheapest place to test a style.
Etsy/Gumroad (direct sales): You sell themed packs of 10-20 wallpapers for $1.99-$4.99. Lower volume, higher revenue per sale, and both platforms take fees (see Step 6). Buyers want curated, cohesive sets.
Reddit and social media (audience building): Post your best wallpapers to wallpaper subreddits. Build a following. Link to your packs or Zedge profile in your bio. Free marketing with high engagement.
Real Earnings: January - March 2026 (First 3 Months)

Zedge: $164 from 10,000 unlocks in the first 3 months of 2026. Nearly 10,000 unique users found my wallpapers through Zedge’s organic search. No paid promotion. That works out to about 1.6 cents per unlock ($164.06 divided by 10,000, my own calculation from the dashboard). Most of it came early. Daily revenue peaked near $6 in mid-January and sat around $0.50 to $1 a day by March, so a batch earns most in its first weeks. The dashboard also warns that ad revenue uses a variable ad rate that only becomes fixed after 7 days, so the figures can still move.
What are AI phone wallpapers? AI-generated phone wallpapers are vertical-format digital art optimized for mobile screens (9:16 or taller). Created with text-to-image AI models, they can be distributed on platforms like Zedge for ad revenue or sold as themed packs on Etsy and Gumroad.
Table of Contents
- Step 1: Research What’s Trending
- Step 2: Pick the Right AI Model and Style
- Step 3: Write Prompts for Phone Wallpapers
- Step 4: Generate and Review
- Step 5: Keyword and Tag
- Step 6: Distribute Across Platforms
- Common Mistakes
Step 1: Research What’s Trending
Wallpaper trends move fast. What’s hot this week might be stale next month. Regular research keeps your output relevant.
Where to Find What Sells
| Source | What You Learn | How to Access (Free) |
|---|---|---|
| Wallhaven Toplist | Highest-rated wallpapers this week (by user favorites) | wallhaven.cc → Top List → Last 7 Days |
| Zedge Trending | What’s being downloaded en masse right now | zedge.net/wallpapers (trending section) |
| Zedge Popular | All-time download winners (evergreen styles) | zedge.net/find/wallpapers/popular |
| Reddit Wallpaper Subs | Real requests and upvote signals | r/wallpapers, r/Amoledbackgrounds, r/iPhoneWallpapers |
| Reddit Art Subs | Emerging visual styles and aesthetics | r/ImaginaryLandscapes, r/Art |
| Aesthetic direction and color palette trends | Search “gradient wallpaper,” “dark amoled wallpaper,” “minimalist phone aesthetic” |
The research method
Wallhaven’s toplist shows what enthusiasts love. Zedge downloads show what the mass market wants. Where those two overlap, you have a high-confidence niche.
Reddit is gold for finding specific unfilled requests. Sort by “new” in wallpaper subreddits and look for posts like “anyone have a good dark botanical wallpaper?” or “looking for anime wallpapers that aren’t too busy.” Those are real gaps you can fill.
Proven subject rankings
These rankings come from my own production batches and download counts. It is a small sample, not Zedge data, so treat it as a starting guess:
| Rank | Subject | Performance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dark/AMOLED silhouettes | Consistently high | Silhouette + single warm light source = winning formula |
| 2 | Dark characters (samurai, warriors, wolves) | Very high | From behind, not facing camera |
| 3 | Dark fantasy creatures | Very high | Dragons, jellyfish, sandworms filling the vertical frame |
| 4 | Anime scenes | Very high | Seedream excels at cel-shading |
| 5 | Abstract (liquid chrome, fractals) | High | Against OLED black backgrounds |
| 6 | Nature (waterfalls, god rays) | High | Works beyond dark themes |
| 7 | Minimalist (moon cliff, lone tree) | High | Reproducible, iconic compositions |
| 8 | Gradient abstracts | Moderate | Clean and safe, good filler |
Zedge and Etsy want different tags for the same wallpaper, which doubles the typing. AutoKeyWorder (ad, own product) is a Chrome extension that reads each image with AI vision and fills titles, keywords and categories directly inside the Zedge upload form, with no CSV export and no re-import. AutoKeyWorder runs at roughly 5 seconds per image and covers Zedge, Etsy, Adobe Stock, Shutterstock, Freepik (now Magnific Contributor), Displate and TeePublic. Install is free with 50 credits included, one credit per image, no credit card. Start with the 50 free credits
Step 2: Pick the Right AI Model and Style
Model Selection
| Scenario | Model | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Flat graphic design (ukiyo-e, art deco, retro travel, geometric, watercolor) | Recraft V4 (default) | $0.04/image on Recraft’s API |
| Photorealistic / atmospheric (anime, cinematic, abstract particles) | Seedream 4.5 via Kie.ai | $0.0325/image (6.5 credits) |
Partner links from this table: Kie.ai (ad).
Recraft V4 is the default for most wallpaper styles. Use Seedream, which you can run on Kie.ai (ad), when you need atmospheric depth, lighting effects, or anime cel-shading. The Seedream price is from the Kie.ai Seedream 4.5 page and the Recraft price is from the Recraft API pricing page, both read on October 7, 2026. Kie.ai does not list Recraft V4 text-to-image, so Recraft V4 runs on Recraft’s own API. Kie.ai says top-ups bring it to about $0.030, and prices change, so check the page before you budget a batch.
Validated style rankings
I tested these styles in my own production batches and scored them with my own composite quality score. The score rates how good the output looks, not how well it sells:
| Rank | Style | Model | Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Anime | Seedream | 4.37 | Dark navy + 2+ saturated color accents. NOT monotone dark. |
| 2 | Ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock) | Recraft | 4.23 | Warm cream background, vermillion/indigo palette, bold outlines |
| 3 | Gradient Mesh | Recraft | 3.95 | Smooth color transitions, no hard subjects |
| 4 | Art Deco | Recraft | 3.79 | Geometric, gold accents, rich backgrounds |
| 5 | Watercolor | Recraft | 3.77 | Soft bleeding edges, cream/white background |
| 6 | Retro Travel | Recraft | 3.65 | Vintage poster style, warm earth tones |
Styles that failed testing: Dark Cinematic, Neon Glow, Botanical, Risograph, Ink Wash, Art Nouveau. These either lacked contrast, triggered content policies, or looked like textbook illustrations.
Style diversity rule
Each batch of 5 wallpapers must use at least 3 different art styles. Don’t converge on one winning style. Rotate through the leaderboard and let download data tell you what works for your audience.
Step 3: Write Prompts for Phone Wallpapers
Wallpaper prompts are shorter than stock photo or poster prompts. In my own batches the sweet spot was 50-80 words for Seedream and 60-150 words for Recraft.
Critical design rules
- Always vertical. 9:16 minimum, and about 9:19.5 for many modern phones. A landscape image cropped to fit a phone loses most of the scene.
- Widget-safe zone. The top 15-40% of the wallpaper must be low-complexity (simple sky, solid color, gradient). That’s where the clock, date, and notification widgets sit on a phone screen.
- Subject in the lower half. Place your main subject in the lower 40-60% of the canvas.
- OLED optimization for dark themes. Use “pure true black” not “dark grey.” On OLED screens, true black pixels switch off, which gives stronger contrast and can save power. The r/Amoledbackgrounds sidebar makes the same point.
Recraft wallpaper formula
Vertical [style] phone wallpaper with [background description].
[Subject] rendered in [technique] fills the lower 40-70% of the tall frame.
[Vertical leading lines] exploit the 9:16 format.
[2-3 named colors with approximate coverage].
Top 15% of canvas is [low-complexity zone] for widget compatibility.
No text, no watermark, no border, no flat vector art, no clipart.
Seedream wallpaper formula
Paragraph 1: [Art style lead if applicable]. [Subject positioned in lower two-thirds].
[Vertical canvas composition].
Paragraph 2: [Light source, direction, color temperature].
[How light interacts with the scene].
Paragraph 3: No text, no watermark. [Style-specific constraints].
No flat vector art, no clipart, no icon design.
Example Prompts
Ukiyo-e (Recraft):
Vertical Japanese woodblock print phone wallpaper with warm cream background and bold black outlines. A mountain temple with curved roofs rendered in flat vermillion red and indigo blue sits among layered mountain ridges in the lower 40% of the tall frame. Cherry blossom branches frame the sides. Flat color planes with visible woodgrain texture. Vermillion, indigo, and forest green against warm cream. Upper 40% of canvas is simple cream sky with minimal cloud pattern for widget compatibility. No text, no watermark, no border, no flat vector art, no clipart.
Anime (Seedream):
Cel-shaded anime-style digital art of a stone temple built into a cliff face, positioned in the lower third of a vertical canvas. Teal waterfalls cascade down the cliff sides. Pink wisteria vines drape from temple eaves. Dark navy sky with stars and a glowing crescent moon above. Bold outlines, flat color planes. Warm teal and soft pink accents against deep navy. Soft moonlight from above with cool blue-white ambient glow on wet stone surfaces. No text, no watermark. No realistic proportions, no photographic textures. No flat vector art, no clipart, no icon design.
Art Deco (Recraft):
Vertical art deco phone wallpaper with rich emerald green background. A majestic peacock rendered in geometric gold fan shapes fills the lower two-thirds of the frame, tail feathers radiating upward as angular rays. Warm amber and antique gold dominate with deep emerald accents. Crisp geometric edges, zero gradients, fully flat graphic treatment. Top 15% is simple emerald field for widget compatibility. No text, no watermark, no border, no flat vector art, no clipart.
Gradient Mesh (Recraft):
Vertical smooth gradient mesh phone wallpaper with flowing organic color transitions. A temple silhouette emerges from flowing blends of deep violet and warm amber in the lower 40% of the tall frame. Cool cyan and teal gradients flow through the upper 60% like northern lights, smooth and empty. No hard edges anywhere, all forms defined by color temperature shifts. Upper 40% of canvas is smooth flowing gradient with no subject for widget compatibility. No text, no watermark, no border, no flat vector art, no clipart.
AMOLED Dark (Seedream):
A lone samurai standing on a rocky outcrop, viewed from behind, positioned in the lower third of a vertical canvas. Pure true black background covering 70% of the image. The samurai’s armor catches a single warm amber light source from the upper right. Katana resting across the shoulders. Distant mountain silhouette barely visible against the dark sky. Warm amber at 10%, pure true black at 80%, dark slate at 10%. No text, no watermark. No flat vector art, no clipart, no icon design.
Step 4: Generate and Review
Generation Workflow
- Open Kie.ai (ad)
- Select your model (Seedream on Kie.ai, or Recraft V4 on Recraft’s own API)
- Set aspect ratio to 9:16 (vertical, phone format)
- Paste your prompt
- Generate, review at 100% zoom
Generate in themed batches of 10-20. A cohesive pack looks more professional, and a buyer who likes one image has more to like. I have no measured sales number for packs against mixed uploads, so I will not quote one.
Quality Checks
Before keeping a wallpaper, verify:
- No text artifacts or random symbols
- Widget zone (top 15-20%) is clean and low-complexity
- Subject is in the lower half, not centered vertically
- Colors are saturated and not washed out
- Vertical composition feels intentional, not cropped from horizontal
Upscaling (Optional but Recommended)
Check Zedge’s upload screen for its current size rules. For Etsy packs where buyers expect premium quality, upscaling to 2K or more with Topaz upscaling on kie.ai (ad) gives your product a professional edge.
Step 5: Keyword and Tag
Tagging strategy changes by platform.
Zedge Tags
Zedge uses its own tagging system. Include:
- Device terms (“iPhone wallpaper,” “Samsung Galaxy background,” “phone wallpaper”)
- Color terms (“dark wallpaper,” “blue aesthetic,” “pastel pink”)
- Style terms (“anime wallpaper,” “minimalist,” “AMOLED”)
- Subject terms (the specific content of your wallpaper)
Etsy Tags (For Packs)
Etsy allows up to 13 tags per listing. Make every one count. AutoKeyWorder (ad, own product) generates platform-specific tags from your images.
Title structure for Etsy wallpaper packs:
[Count] [Style] Phone Wallpapers [Theme] | [Device] | Instant Download
Example: “20 Japanese Ukiyo-e Phone Wallpapers Temple Collection | iPhone Android | Instant Download”
General tagging tips
- Tag for device (“iPhone 15 wallpaper”, “Samsung Galaxy wallpaper”). Type a few device names into the platform search box and use the ones it suggests
- Tag for color mood (“dark aesthetic,” “warm tones,” “neon”)
- Tag for use case (“AMOLED,” “lock screen,” “home screen”)
- Tag for community (“lo-fi aesthetic,” “dark academia,” “cottagecore”)
Step 6: Distribute Across Platforms
Zedge (Fastest Traction)
Zedge has large organic traffic. Upload your wallpapers, tag them well, and watch the dashboard. Zedge shows impressions, clicks and downloads for each item, and it supports A/B tests. Source for everything below: the Zedge creator page, read on October 7, 2026.
- Free to upload. You never pay to start.
- Three models per item: Free, Ad-Gated and Paid. You can change the model later. On paid downloads you keep 70%.
- 35M+ monthly active users across all of Zedge, by Zedge’s own count.
- AI work is allowed, but Zedge says it must still be your own original creation.
- Before payouts you set up business details, a tax form and a payout method. The page states no payout minimum, so check your dashboard.
- You keep ownership of your work and can remove it at any time.
My own upload workflow with AutoKeyWorder is in AutoKeyWorder on Zedge.
Etsy (Highest Per-Sale Revenue)
Sell themed packs as digital downloads on Etsy.
- Bundle 10-20 wallpapers per pack
- Price at $1.99-$4.99 (my usual range)
- Include both standard and AMOLED versions if applicable
- Use mockup images showing wallpapers on actual phone screens
Etsy rules and fees. Etsy lets you say an item was made with AI, but you must say it in the listing description. Write it in plain words, such as “Wallpapers generated with AI tools from my own prompts, then selected and bundled by me.” See the Etsy Creativity Standards. A digital listing holds up to five files of 20MB each, so zip a big pack (Etsy help). Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee and a 6.5% transaction fee, plus payment processing (Etsy fee policy). With a US bank account and the usual 3% + $0.25 processing fee, those fees take roughly a quarter of a $2.99 pack, my own calculation. Cheap items feel the fixed parts most.
Mockup tip: Placeit (ad) has phone mockup templates. Upload your wallpaper, get a professional product image in seconds. Or use Canva’s free tier for basic mockups.
Gumroad (Build Your Audience)
Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 per transaction on sales through your own profile or links, and 30% when a new customer finds you through its Discover marketplace (Gumroad pricing, read on October 7, 2026). Gumroad also acts as merchant of record and handles sales tax for you. The fixed $0.50 weighs on cheap items: on a $2.99 pack it takes about $0.80, roughly 27% (my own calculation). At wallpaper prices Gumroad is not clearly cheaper than Etsy, so use it for the audience you bring yourself, not for the fee. It does not send you buyers on its own.
Reddit (Free Marketing)
Post your best wallpapers to:
Read each sub’s rules before you post. r/Amoledbackgrounds, for example, asks for at least 50% true black, no reposts, no wallpapers from premium apps, and your source in the comments (rules read on October 7, 2026). I could not load the r/wallpapers and r/iPhoneWallpapers rule pages, so check them yourself before you link a shop or a Zedge profile.
Common Mistakes
Horizontal composition. Phone screens are vertical. A landscape wallpaper cropped to fit a phone looks terrible. Design for 9:16 from the start.
Ignoring the widget zone. The top 15-20% of a phone screen shows the clock, date, and widgets. If your wallpaper has busy detail in that area, it clashes with the UI and users skip it.
All one style. A batch of 10 dark cinematic wallpapers teaches you nothing about what your audience wants. Mix 3-4 different styles per batch and let download data guide your next batch.
Dark grey instead of true black. For AMOLED wallpapers, dark grey (#1A1A1A) keeps the pixels lit. True black (#000000) switches them off. The r/Amoledbackgrounds rules ask for posts with at least 50% true black.
No themed packs. A random collection of 20 unrelated wallpapers is hard to title and hard to find. A “Japanese Temple Collection” or “Neon City Nights Pack” has one theme, one style and one clear title. I have no measured multiplier for it.
Skipping Zedge. Many beginners go straight to Etsy. Zedge reports 35M+ monthly active users, and its dashboard shows impressions, clicks and downloads for each item. That makes it a cheap way to see which styles get traction. Use Zedge for data, then package your winners into Etsy packs.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make money selling phone wallpapers? Yes, but the amounts are small. My own Zedge dashboard showed $164.06 net revenue from 10,000 unlocks in the first quarter of 2026. Zedge pays for ad-gated and paid downloads, and Etsy packs sell for $1.99-$4.99 in my range. Fees and low pay per sale mean you need volume.
What resolution should phone wallpapers be? Design at 9:16 minimum aspect ratio (1080x1920 or higher). Many modern phones use taller ratios around 9:19.5. Higher resolution gives buyers more flexibility across different phone models.
What wallpaper styles are most popular? In my own batches, dark AMOLED designs and anime scenes did best, and anime also had the highest quality score, with ukiyo-e second (see the tables above). It is a small sample. Mixing styles in each batch shows you what your audience likes.
Should I sell wallpapers on Zedge or Etsy? Start with Zedge. It is free and shows you which styles perform. Then package your best wallpapers into themed Etsy packs for higher revenue per sale. Both platforms work together.
Are AI wallpapers allowed on Zedge and Etsy? Yes on both, with conditions. Zedge says AI-generated content must still be your own original creation. Etsy requires you to say in the listing description that AI was used. I read both rules on October 7, 2026. Sources: the Zedge creator page and the Etsy Creativity Standards.
What is the widget-safe zone on wallpapers? The top 15-20% of a phone wallpaper displays the clock, date, and notification widgets. Keep this area low-complexity (solid color, simple gradient, or open sky) so the wallpaper doesn’t clash with the phone’s interface.
Your next steps
- Research: Spend 20 minutes on Wallhaven toplist and r/Amoledbackgrounds. Identify 3 styles you want to create.
- Generate: Create a themed batch of 10 wallpapers on Kie.ai (ad). Use at least 3 different styles.
- Tag: Keyword with AutoKeyWorder (ad, own product).
- Upload to Zedge: Get your first batch live. Then watch impressions, clicks and downloads per item.
- Package for Etsy: Bundle your best 10-20 into a themed pack. Price at $2.99-$4.99.
- Post on Reddit: Share your best 2-3 pieces in wallpaper subreddits for free exposure.
