The best Etsy shop ideas for a beginner are digital products built from a tool or craft you already have, in a niche narrow enough that a buyer would type your exact phrase. The tables below show how big each idea is, what it costs to start and where it bites.
Quick pick: a narrow Notion or Canva template built for one job, or a pattern for a craft you already do. Test one for a weekend.

I run a small Etsy shop called HappyVectors, digital icon packs, since January 2025. Over 20 months it made EUR 372.78 from 113 orders. So I’m no guru. “Just sell what you love” never gave me a number, so this page does.
Here are 18 ideas, each with a US Google search number, a start cost and the catch nobody mentions. For the four product paths, see what to sell on Etsy. This page goes one level down, to specific products.
How I scored these ideas
Etsy doesn’t publish search volume for its own search bar. So I pulled monthly US searches on Google for each product phrase from DataForSEO on 2026-10-20. That number says how many people look for the thing at all. I chose it over eRank’s Etsy estimates because I can date it and repeat it, while eRank’s figures come from a panel I can’t audit (more on that below). It does not say how many look for it on Etsy, and it can’t see a tiny niche that only Etsy shoppers type. Treat it as a size check, not a forecast.
Etsy’s marketplace did $10.46 billion in gross merchandise sales in 2025, per its annual report, and ended the year with 86.5 million active buyers, down 3.4%. Buyers aren’t flooding in, so a new shop has to be specific.
Two rules I used for every row:
- Seasonal peaks are in the table. A product that gets 60,500 searches in one month and 6,600 in another is a different business from one that holds steady.
- A hobby search isn’t a buyer search. “Candle making” gets 22,200 searches a month, but the phrase reads like people learning to make candles, not people buying them. I left it out.
9 digital Etsy shop ideas
Digital products have no material cost and nothing to ship. The catch is that a file sells for little, so volume has to do the work. My own average order is about EUR 3.30.
| Idea | US Google searches per month | Start cost | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital planner | 12,100 (18,100 in December) | $0, free design tool | Plain planners are everywhere. Add an angle. |
| Notion template | 18,100 | $0, free plan | Free templates exist, so give yours one job, like an invoice tracker. |
| Canva template | 22,200 | $0, free plan | You deliver a link, not a file. Check Canva’s and Etsy’s current rules first. |
| Wedding invitation template | 33,100 (60,500 in Nov 2025) | $0 | Big seasonal swing. In my read, a crowded shelf. |
| Printable wall art | 1,900 | Design tool, or reworked AI art | Many near-identical listings. Disclose AI use. |
| Digital stickers | 1,000 | Drawing app | Small number. Sell sets, not single stickers. |
| Crochet pattern | 74,000 | Yarn and testing time | Many searches are free-pattern hunters, so real buyers are fewer. Test every size. |
| Cross stitch pattern | 33,100 | Free or cheap pattern software | Same free-pattern problem. Stitch-test it first. |
| Clipart or icon pack | 140 (clipart bundle), 170 (svg bundle) | Vector editor | Tiny numbers. My lane, and it earns pennies. |
Two things stand out.
First, the biggest numbers belong to patterns, not to graphics. A pattern PDF is something a buyer uses for hours, so it costs little next to the yarn. A $2 clipart set has no such anchor. Remember the catch in those rows, though: many pattern searches come from people hunting for a free one.
Second, my own lane shows 140 and 170 searches a month on Google, yet the shop took 113 orders over 20 months. The orders are tiny, but they happened. A low Google number doesn’t prove zero Etsy demand, because Google can’t see what Etsy shoppers type.
Every idea in these tables ends at the same blank form: title, 13 tags, description. AutoKeyWorder (ad, own product) is my Chrome extension for that form. AutoKeyWorder reads your product image with AI vision and fills the Etsy title, all 13 tags, description, category and materials inside Etsy’s own listing editor, in about 5 seconds per image, with no CSV export and no re-import. It has supported Etsy since extension version 1.4.9.
AutoKeyWorder installs free with 50 credits and no credit card. An Etsy listing costs 2 credits, so that’s 25 listings before you pay anything.

7 personalized and made-to-order Etsy shop ideas
Personalization is where buyers pay more for the same object. About a third of Etsy sales carry some kind of customization, per Printful’s 2026 Etsy statistics roundup. The cost is that every sale needs a name, a date or a photo from the buyer.
| Idea | US Google searches per month | Start cost | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custom pet portrait | 6,600 (12,100 in Dec) | Tablet and skill, or a commissioned artist | Every order is custom work. Turnaround is the product. |
| Personalized name necklace | 3,600 | Jewelry stock | A plain name necklace has no angle. |
| Birth flower necklace | 2,900 | Same | Etsy’s 2026 trend report named it, so expect copycats. |
| Embroidered sweatshirt | 9,900 (18,100 in Nov and Dec) | Machine, or a print on demand partner | Embroidery costs a partner more per unit, so margin shrinks. |
| Sticker sheet | 8,100 | Printer and cutter, or a partner | Cutting and packing eat hours. A $4 item rarely pays to ship. |
| Teacher gift | 18,100 (60,500 in Dec 2025) | Depends on the gift | Two short seasons, December and May. Plan ahead. |
| Resin coasters | 3,600 | Resin, molds, ventilated space | Curing time and safety gear. Not a weekend test. |
The pattern I’d copy: the teacher gift row. Two spikes, December and May, are predictable. A shop built around a predictable spike can list in October and wait.
I’d skip anything on this table that needs a machine you don’t own yet. Sweatshirts and sticker sheets are the print on demand rows: a partner prints and ships after someone orders, but takes a real cut. A $20 mug can leave you around $8 after the partner’s cut, per ProfitTree’s comparison, and that is before Etsy’s own fees.
2 handmade and vintage Etsy shop ideas
These two sit outside the tables because they need supply or materials before a search number helps. I give their Google numbers in the text.
Vintage jewelry (27,100 US searches a month, 40,500 in December 2025). No production cost, since you’re not making anything. Etsy requires a vintage item to be at least 20 years old, per its vintage policy. The bottleneck is supply: estate sales, thrift stores and auctions. If you already have a steady source, this is a real shop. If not, it’s a plan, not a start.
Small-batch candles in a narrow scent story (“soy candles” gets 18,100, and 40,500 in November and December 2025). Plain soy candles compete with everyone. A candle tied to one place, one hobby or one season gives a buyer a phrase to type. The catch is shipping weight and breakage, and it needs a batch of materials before you know if the scent sells.
When to list a seasonal idea
List a seasonal idea a couple of months before its peak, not in the peak month. Five rows above spike hard. Look at the monthly US data from the same DataForSEO pull for October to December 2025, starting with “teacher gift”: 8,100 searches in October, 22,200 in November, 60,500 in December. “Wedding invitation template” went from 40,500 in October to 60,500 in November. Embroidered sweatshirts went from 12,100 in October to 18,100 in November, and digital planners from 12,100 in October to 18,100 in December.
The climb starts before the peak month. A new listing also needs time to collect its first views, favorites and sales, and Etsy search has nothing to rank until it does. A listing that goes live in December for a December buyer is already late.
The flip side: a steady row like Notion templates (18,100 in September and 18,100 in October of last year) has no deadline. That makes it the easier first test if you hate calendar pressure.
Rules to check before you list
Three mistakes get a new listing pulled, and all three are cheap to avoid.
- Licensed characters and franchises. A cartoon mouse on a sticker sheet is an infringement report waiting to happen, however popular the search is.
- Purchased templates and clipart sold on unchanged. Etsy tightened its original-design rules in August 2026, per ShieldMyShop’s writeup. If AI made any part of the design, Etsy also expects you to say so in the listing.
- A copied top-seller listing. Same photo, same title, same tags. You get no ranking from it, and you risk a complaint.
What each sale really costs you
Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing of 3% plus $0.25 on US sales, per Etsy’s fee page. The flat parts hurt cheap items most. Etsy’s page blocked my automated check, so I confirmed these rates against several current fee guides on 2026-10-20. Etsy changes them, so check the page before you price.
| Sale price | Etsy fees (US, no ads, no shipping) | Share of price | You keep before your own costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| $5 | $0.93 | 18.5% | $4.07 |
| $15 | $1.88 | 12.5% | $13.12 |
| $30 | $3.30 | 11.0% | $26.70 |
| $200 | $19.45 | 9.7% | $180.55 |
That $200 row answers a question people ask: how much does Etsy take from a $200 sale? About $19.45 in fees, before ads and before what you paid to make the item.
The $5 row is why bundles beat single files. Selling a single file for $2 loses about a third of the price to fees. A bundle at $8 to $10 keeps much more of each sale.
How to test any idea in one weekend
You don’t need to pick the perfect idea. You need a cheap way to find out. This is the loop I run for every new HappyVectors pack:
- Pick three ideas from the tables.
- Type each one into Etsy’s search bar and read what autocompletes. Those are real searches other buyers typed.
- Open the top 10 results. If every result has thousands of reviews and the newest was last week, you’re fighting a wall. If the top results have weak photos and generic titles, there’s an opening.
- Add one angle: an occasion, a recipient or a style. “Digital planner” is a wall. “Digital planner for nurses on rotating shifts” is a phrase a person types.
- Make one listing for the best of the three and give it two to three weeks. Read your Shop Manager stats for visits, favorites and orders. Writing the title and tags well is its own skill, and my guides to Etsy tags and Etsy SEO cover it.
If a listing gets visits but no orders, fix the photos and price. If it gets no visits, fix the title and tags. Those are different problems, and the listing optimization checklist separates them.
How to judge trending, unique and best-selling ideas
People add three words to this search, and each one needs a different move:
- Trending: a trend is a spike, and spikes fade. Etsy’s own trend report named birth-flower jewelry, so copycats are coming. Compare the same month year over year, because a December gift peak is not a trend.
- Unique: nobody can sell you a unique idea ready-made. Add one angle, such as an occasion, a recipient or a style.
- Best selling: Etsy doesn’t hand out a list of best-selling items, so read the competition. Open the top results for your phrase, then note how many sales each shop shows and how long it has been open. Sales per year is your rough measure.

eRank’s page for “cat mom gift” in my Etsy SEO tools test: 148 average searches, while Etsy’s own count for the same phrase was 1,200 in 30 days.
Check an idea’s search demand before you make it. I run each short list through eRank (ad): type a phrase and it shows an estimated Etsy search volume, competition and the tags the top listings use. Its numbers come from its own data, not from Etsy, and they can sit far from what Etsy reports, so I use it to cut ten ideas down to two, not to forecast sales. The free plan allows 5 lookups a day with no card.
If you want to compare eRank with the other paid research tool, I did that in eRank vs EverBee, and best Etsy SEO tools tests both against Etsy’s own numbers.
My pick: a narrow template first, a pattern second
If I were opening a shop tomorrow with $50 and a free weekend, and had to settle what to sell on Etsy by Sunday, I’d pick one row from the digital table and add one angle. My order of preference:
- A narrow Notion or Canva template for one job, if you work with templates already. A free plan covers the start.
- A crochet or cross stitch pattern, if you already do the craft. The Google numbers are huge, but many of those searchers want a free pattern, so test before you invest weeks.
- Anything personalized that you can deliver as a digital file, like a name-based printable.
What I’d skip as a first shop: wedding templates, plain digital planners and plain name necklaces. In my read those are the three most crowded shelves in the tables, and a new shop with no reviews has nothing to set it apart.
Here is the proof I’m not selling a dream. This is my own HappyVectors stats page from January 2025 to September 2026.
7,549 visits
113 orders
1.5% conversion rate
EUR 372.78 revenue

That’s EUR 372.78 in 20 months, and the lines have fallen in the latest months because I let the shop sit quiet. It proves the bar to start is low. It doesn’t prove digital products are easy money, and I won’t pretend it does. My how to sell on Etsy guide walks through the shop setup and the fees step by step, and my SVG and clipart guide covers the icon pack lane in detail.
Frequently asked questions
What would be a good thing to sell on Etsy? A digital product in a narrow niche, made with a free tool. Patterns, templates and personalized printables give the best mix of low start cost and a search phrase a buyer would actually type.
How much does Etsy take from a $200 sale? About $19.45 on a US sale with no ads and no shipping: $0.20 listing fee, $13.00 transaction fee, and $6.25 payment processing. Your own costs come on top.
What can I sell besides Etsy? Marketplaces that handle production, like Redbubble, work for designs you don’t want to ship yourself. My Redbubble vs Etsy comparison puts the money math side by side.
Do I need to make the product myself? Not always. Etsy allows items you designed but had produced, and items you sourced under its rules. It does not allow reselling a mass-produced item you didn’t design. If AI made any part of the design, say so in the listing.
Your next step
I’d rather you publish one honest listing this weekend than read another month of lists. Your own Shop Manager stats, three weeks from now, will tell you more than this page can.
