Seamless Pattern Checker: Find the Seam Before Your Buyers Do

Drop in one pattern tile. See it repeat, and get a measured seam score for basic, half-drop and half-brick repeats.

The edge score compares the pixels that meet at a seam with the normal step between neighbouring pixels inside your tile. 1x means the seam looks like the rest of the image. Above 2x, a line usually shows. Big tiles are scored on a copy scaled to 2048 px.

How the seam check works

A tile is seamless when its right edge flows into its left edge, and its bottom edge flows into its top edge. The checker reads both pairs of edges pixel by pixel. It then compares the jump across the seam with the jump between any two neighbouring pixels inside your tile.

That second number matters. A busy texture has big jumps everywhere, so a big jump at the seam is normal there. A soft watercolour has tiny jumps, so even a small step at the seam shows as a line. A tiled preview alone leaves that call to your eyes. The score gives you a number.

Basic, half-drop and half-brick repeats

RepeatHow the tiles sitWhat the tile needs
BasicStraight rows and columnsLeft matches right, top matches bottom
Half-dropEvery second column moves down by half a tileLeft matches right half a tile lower, and an even pixel height
Half-brickEvery second row moves right by half a tileTop matches bottom half a tile across, and an even pixel width

A tile can pass basic and fail half-drop. Motifs that cross the side edge get cut in the wrong place when the next column drops by half. Fabric printers like Spoonflower let you pick the repeat type at upload, so check the one you will choose.

The even-pixel rule is simple. Half of a 2001 px tile is 1000.5 px. A printer cannot place half a pixel, so a thin line can show where the halves meet.

How to fix a seam

Repeat size for print

Spoonflower says it prints at a minimum of 150 DPI. The printed size is the pixels divided by 150: a 1800 x 1800 px tile repeats every 12 inches. The checker shows the size at 150 and at 300 DPI. Use the DPI calculator to work out the pixels for a target size, and the image resolution checker for stock and Etsy minimums.
